How to Use the Colour of the Year in your Living Room

Earlier this year, Pantone Inc announced that its colour of 2014 was Radiant Orchid, which it describes as “an expressive, creative and embracing purple”.

Where Pantone leads, designers follow. Yet when it comes to creating a coherent design scheme for your living room, purple isn’t the easiest of colours to get right, which is why we’ve created these 3 simple design schemes for you.

1.        High drama

Purple is a regal colour. Historically, it was worn by Roman emperors, magistrates and Catholic bishops.

If you’d like to bring some much needed hauteur into your living room, think about hanging a wallpaper which really stands out, such as this purple and black zebra print wallpaper, or this Grandeco Royal House Elise floral wallpaper.

A theatrical backdrop will create a sense of occasion and interest. Adding black or gold to your scheme will amp up the drama you’ve already established with your statement wallpaper. Consider gilt picture frames, lamps and mirrors, as well as black lacquer furniture and black leather upholstered arm chairs to complete the look.

2.       It’s a girl’s world

Though purple doesn’t have to be girlie, it can be if you want it to be.

Using a palette of purples, lilacs and pinks, you can create a charming, feminine scheme. Remember to invest in pretty vintage artworks, lamps and mirrors if you favour a chintzy look, but stick to simple fabrics, blinds and minimal accessories if you prefer a more subdued feel.

You might also like to consider floral and butterfly prints, which often feature the colour of the year.

3.       Stripes

Not only do classic vertical or horizontal stripes never go out of fashion, they provide us with a great way to break up large spaces, and can make smaller spaces feel cosier and more intimate.

Wallpapers featuring purple and white stripes can be hung in an afternoon, totally transforming a space.

If you opt for a stripy backdrop, choose simple accessories in complementary hues, and group them on side tables and shelves.

When it comes to furniture, plump for whites and creams for a classic feel. Simply finish with lamps, pictures and rugs.

4.       Purple haze

Of course, purple doesn’t have to be confined to your living room. It’s an extremely versatile colour, which can be used in any number of rooms in your home. So, what are you waiting for, start experimenting with Pantone’s colour of the year today!
